Orioles’ Heston Kjerstad hits first MLB home run to break up Rays’ no-hit bid: ‘That was surreal’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:44:26 GMT

From on the field to off it, the Orioles’ young core of current and former top prospects are always competing. Heston Kjerstad knew that playful banter wouldn’t end with his first career home run Friday night. In his second big league game and first start, Kjerstad clobbered a solo home run in his third career at-bat in Baltimore’s 7-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He knew his friend and former No. 1 prospect Gunnar Henderson previously one-upped him, though.“He did it his second [at-bat], not the third one, so he had me beat on that one,” Kjerstad said with a laugh. The 24-year-old was promoted Thursday to reach his destination more than three years after the Orioles made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft. The path he traveled to hit his first major league homer was windier than most players who achieve the feat.He missed the first two years of his career with heart and hamstring ailments and didn’t make his professional debut until June 1...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday arrived in Russia’s far eastern port of Vladivostok, where he was shown nuclear-capable bombers as he continued a trip that has sparked Western concerns about an arms alliance that could fuel Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.Kim’s to visit to Russia, highlighted by a summit with Putin on Wednesday, comes amid momentum in military cooperation between the countries in which North Korea could potentially seek Russian technologies to advance Kim’s military nuclear program in exchange for providing Russia with badly needed munitions.Later in Vladivostok, Kim was expected to see Russian naval ships of the country’s Pacific fleet, which could be another hint at what he wants from Russia. More than a few eyebrows raised back in May when 50 Cent announced a world tour dubbed The Final Lap, which filled St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center Friday. While the man born Curtis James Jackson III hasn’t confirmed it’s his farewell tour, many wondered if it wasn’t more of a hello tour. His 2003 debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” and its monster single “In da Club” made 50 an instant star. But 50 turned out to be a star that burned hot and fast. His scored his final major hit with 2007’s “Ayo Technology,” which showed up midway through his set, and hasn’t released a new album since 2014’s flop “Animal Ambition.”As his musical career faded, 50’s business instincts kicked in and it turns out he’s pretty good at the whole entrepreneur thing. He’s made millions through a series of endorsements and collaborations in film, apparel, liquor, technology and publishing. His highest-profile project, the Starz crime drama “Power”...

That was certainly the case for St. Thomas Academy on Friday night in Eagan. The Cadets rolled to a big early lead against longtime rival Cretin-Derham Hall and held on in the second half for a 35-17 win in front of a big crowd at TCO Stadium.Playing about a mile from their Mendota Heights campus, the Cadets looked right at home. Senior running back Savion Hart did it all for St. Thomas Academy (2-1), rushing for a pair of first-half touchdowns and adding another one through the air moments before halftime. It was a nice reward for the do-it-all senior back who is garnering interest from a number of Division I schools.“He’s probably the best running back in the state, and we ask him to block and receive the ball and do a little kick return, and he accepts his role,” said Cadets head coach Travis Walch. “He’s been a great teammate is what I have been most impressed with.”Cretin-Derham Hall (1-2) received the opening kickoff and marched 63 yards in 21 p...
