St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office under scrutiny from Auditor

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:20:14 GMT

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri State Auditor says he may file a lawsuit against St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick said she’s not handing over the information he needs to complete the audit to see if her office is wasting taxpayers' money. He said he’s been after certain documents for some time now and has given the Circuit Attorney’s Office deadlines. He said he'd run out of patience.“If we don’t received that in the next week or so, then we will be going to court," Fitzpatrick said. "We basically have to file a lawsuit to enforce the petition in court, where a judge would essentially order the Circuit Attorney’s Office to comply with the subpoena, and if they fail to do that, we would have to go back to the judge and say they didn’t. Then the judge would have to determine if they were going to be held in contempt of court or what was going to happen there. So the next step is just going to court to enforce the subpoena and force them to comply with...

Opinion: Coloradans are tired of high energy bills. Democrats have a plan to help.

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:20:14 GMT

Last December, thousands of Colorado families received an unpleasant early gift for the holidays: an energy bill that was, in many cases, hundreds of dollars more expensive than normal. Many reacted in shock, and our offices were flooded with emails and phone calls from constituents asking for help: Surely, this must be some sort of mistake? I don’t remember using twice as much energy this month; why is my bill twice as expensive? Isn’t there something someone can do to help?Unfortunately, the answer to the first question is no, there was no mistake. Customers really were expected to pay hundreds more than they’re used to for the same exact service. Although it was a colder winter than the previous, that fact alone doesn’t account for the huge increase in costs. The reasons why are as complex as they are infuriating, but the result is the same: an enormous burden on Colorado families and businesses. The answer to the second and third questions is a bit more complicated. Some of the fa...

This story is one in a series featuring trips down memory lane with longtime Casa Bonita fans and former employees who shared their fondest tales with The Denver Post. The restaurant and entertainment venue in Lakewood is expected to reopen in May.“South Park” character Kyle Broflovski once described Casa Bonita as “the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants.” And after spending months talking to longtime fans and former employees, it’s clear that the pink palace truly is the most magical place in Colorado. That ethos is due in no small part to the live entertainment and experiential amenities onsite, which also resemble Disneyland on a small scale, shrunk down to fit perfectly in a strip mall near Denver’s urban core. The restaurant now also has celebrity owners, “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, giving it a dose of Hollywood sheen. In anticipation of Casa Bonita’s reopening sometime this month (official date is TBA), we recently polled The Denver Post’s readers about thei...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:20:14 GMT

Members of the Writers Guild of America are on strike after they could not reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which consists of production companies and Hollywood studios. The writers say that current management proposals do nothing to address changes in the work environment that make economic and working conditions far worse for writers. Following Monday night's decision to strike, the WGA issued a statement. "'The companies' behavior has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing," the statement read. It also gets worse.KTLA 5's Sam Rubin gave some insight as to how some writers are treated. "Imagine working on a show like 'Saturday Night Live' and being asked to come in to help punch up the show, but being asked to come in for just one day," Sam explained. The WGA touched on this in their statement. "From their refusal...
