Drought, water overuse prompt Arizona to limit construction in some fast-growing parts of Phoenix

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:41:00 GMT

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona will not approve new housing construction on the fast-growing edges of metro Phoenix that rely on groundwater thanks to years of overuse and a multi-decade drought that is sapping its water supply. In a news conference Thursday, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced the restrictions that could affect some of the fastest-growing areas of the nation’s fifth-largest city. Officials said developers could still build in the affected areas but would need to find alternative water sources to do so — such as surface or recycled water.Driving the state’s decision was a projection that showed that over the next 100 years, demand in metro Phoenix for almost 4.9 million acre-feet of groundwater would be unmet without further action, Hobbs said. An acre-foot of water is roughly enough for two to three U.S. households per year.Despite the move, the governor said the state isn’t running out of water. “Nobody who has water is going to lose their water,” Hobbs said.Officials ...

Kimura remains in police custody and is undergoing a court-approved mental evaluation until Sept. 1.Some of the people attending the campaign rally, who were mostly from the fishing community, said they were surprised by the loose security arrangements, such as the lack of bag checks and the close distance between them and the prime minister. If Thursday night at Target Field was any indication, the four-game series between the Twins and AL Central rival Cleveland is going to be a wild one. Both teams battled back from multi-run deficits before a sacrifice fly by Willi Castro in the bottom of the ninth gave the Twins a 7-6 before an announced crowd of 16,788.Christian Vazquez led off the ninth with a walk. Keeler: Like Nikola Jokic, Nuggets fans from Littleton to Tel Aviv showed up to NBA Finals looking for a steal. “It’s priceless.”

Like Nikola Jokic, Paige Pecoraro posted up on the low block and went reaching for a steal.“$900,” she grumbled, grimacing as her smart phone refreshed. “I’m waiting for tickets to go under $900.”Hour to game time. Game 1. Nuggets-Heat. First-ever NBA Finals in Denver.Nothing under $900.“I think it’ll be well worth it,” she reasoned as we spoke a block from Ball Arena. “We haven’t been to the Finals, ever.”Pecoraro’s an ICU nurse in Littleton. She’s Nuggets to the core, born and bred. Paige even called in (cough) sick (cough) for Thursday night.“I told them weeks ahead of time, ‘I will NOT work this night,’” she recalled. “I WILL be at this game.’”To make it happen, she worked five shifts last week. Five 12-hour slogs, almost 80 hours in total. Just to be here. Just to fork over almost a week’s salary in one gulp.“I don’t have a ticket right now. My parents just went in. They’re at like club level,” she sighed, refreshing the phone again.“And they’re flying to Miami for (Games 3 and...

Nuggets 3-pointers: Nikola Jokic’s generosity on biggest stage shows sharing means caring in NBA Finals

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:41:00 GMT

Initial observations from the Denver Nuggets’ Game 1 win over the Miami Heat to tip off the 2023 NBA Finals at Ball Arena.1. Joker’s generosity: You can always count on Nikola Jokic to teach the children a wholesome lesson. Greeted by the biggest stage of his career, his first shot attempt wasn’t until Denver’s last possession of the first quarter. By then, he was already nurturing six assists. Twice in the first half when Miami double-teamed him in the post, he kicked out for an open 3-pointer. If the scoring-obsessed corporate entities of the NBA and ESPN were sweating about how to market the two-time MVP before the Finals, imagine the looks on their faces when Jokic still only had three shot attempts at halftime. (He made all three.) And … the Nuggets led by 17. The three best players surrounding Jokic were all in double figures. He joined LeBron James as the only players in the last 25 years with 10 points and 10 assists in any half of an NBA Finals...
